This NBA offseason has been absolutely unpredictable. It has led to players like Isaiah Thomas, Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward, Carmelo Anthony, Paul George, and Chris Paul all wearing different jerseys once the season tips off on October 17th.
One of the only predictable parts of this NBA offseason was that the Chicago Bulls were going to try and reach a buyout with Dwayne “Flash” Wade (Man, that nickname never really stuck around, I wonder why?). Flash’s contract was just so damn bad…well, bad for the Bulls…that it was never destined to see the full end.
Following the buyout, everyone knew this would allow Dwayne Wade to sign with a contender that could get him another ring before he retired. All signs pointed to Wade joining his longtime l̶o̶v̶e̶r̶ friend, LeBron James, on the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s now being reported that the deal is official.
This will bring together 2/3 of the famed “Banana Boat Gang”, 1/2 if you count their fellow longtime l̶o̶v̶e̶r̶ pal, Carmelo Anthony. The four NBA superstars, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul, and Carmelo, have all said in the last few years that they would love the opportunity to play together on the same team before they retire.
As I said above, everyone in the Gang aside from LeBron has been on the move, and none of the four are currently in long-term deals. Are we nearing the formation of the Banana Boat Gang on one of the teams in the Association, and what team will that be? Will everyone join the best player out of the four, LeBron, in Cleveland? Will they all find a way to join Carmelo and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City (assuming Paul George leaves for Los Angeles)? Or will the four all leave their current teams for the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles and join the Lakers with Lonzo Ball and Magic Johnson?
All I know for certain is that I’m looking forward to watching Dwayne Wade trying to guard Kevin Durant or Klay Thompson in an NBA Finals.
