Last night the Cleveland Cavaliers lost 124-107 on their home court to the Indiana Pacers. It’s their 4th loss in a row and their 5th loss in the past 6 games. Those 5 losses have come against the Magic (who are good? Maybe? Idk), Nets, Pelicans, Knicks, and now the Pacers (these 4 teams are definitely not good). The defense is to blame with the Cavs giving up 116.5 ppg in those 6 games and currently holding the worst defensive efficiency in the league at 111.3 which is 29th in the NBA, only better than the struggling Mavericks. To top it off, it was announced today that Tristan Thompson is going to be missing three to four weeks with a calf injury. His 21.6 minutes per game are going to have to be taken by a combination of Kevin Love, new member Ante Zizic, and Channing Frye (definitely not a defensive improvement having to give Frye decent minutes).

You may be thinking “Oh, come on Donny, it’s only eight games into the season.” Well imaginary person, you’re right, they definitely have all season to turn this around and all they need to do in the East is make the playoffs and you have a shot to make the Finals. With that being said, the Cavs are losing to some god awful teams, in fact this is the second-easiest 6 game stretch during the whole NBA season.

Make that 1-5 now.

The team has made a litany of sad excuses in regards to the team including not having good chemistry on the floor, being short-manned (in reference to Isaiah Thomas), and being out of shape.

The on-floor chemistry will come, as this team is dealing with losing their second-best player, Kyrie Irving, while also adding Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, Jeff Green, and Jose Calderon. But, Cavs fans, I’ve got some bad news for you…Isaiah Thomas, a well-known defensive liability, is going to do nothing for the defense and it’s not being “out of shape”…it’s being OLD!!!

LeBron is no stranger to playing on older teams. Since having LeBron on your team has almost guaranteed your franchise an NBA Finals berth, his front offices have stacked their teams with old, wise veterans. This LeBron-led team however, is currently the oldest team in the league and the second-oldest team LeBron has ever played on. They’re going to have to play out of their minds to keep up with teams that are fast-paced like the Warriors.

Do I think the Cavs are going to go far in the Eastern Conference? Of course I do. Do I think they’ll have trouble with the Celtics or the Wizards? Possibly. Do I think they have a prayer at beating whoever comes out of the West (Warriors) in the NBA Finals? Absolutely not. Are they dead? No (if we are talking about making the playoffs) and yes (if we are talking about winning a championship). But that’s what happens when you team up Dwayne Wade, JR Smith, Channing Frye, Jeff Green, Jose Calderon, and Kyle Korver. You end up looking REAAAAL old, or as the Cavs put it, “out of shape”.
