By the off chance that you haven’t heard, LeBron James will be starring in ‘Space Jam 2’ which will be coming out on July 16th, 2021. The movie is of course the sequel to the 1996 movie that starred Michael Jordan, the “ghost” that LeBron has been chasing his whole career. LeBron is coincidentally missing the playoffs for the first time since 2005 (I don’t want to talk about it) and will be using part of his first off season with the Los Angeles Lakers to film the first motion picture that he is the featured actor in.
The movie has been in the news as of late as it nears its production start in June, as it is rumored that LeBron is having trouble finding NBA stars to appear alongside him in the movie. Although most of those rumors are vague, it has specifically been confirmed that 3-time All-Star and potential MVP candidate, Giannis Antetokounmpo, has declined the opportunity to appear in the future summer blockbuster movie.
This leaves the question: Who is going to be starring with LeBron James in ‘Space Jam 2’?
This movie will most likely be filled with at least 5-7 NBA Superstars, but there will be some actors and actresses from Hollywood as well. The first movie had the likes of Bill Murray, Wayne Knight, and even Danny DeVito in the main villian voice role. The sequel is also sure to have some big, comedic names, with my first prediction being the most likely in my mind out of all the people I will talk about in this blog, actors or players:
There’s almost no doubt in my mind that Kevin Hart will be chosen to fulfill the Bill Murray type of role for this movie. He’s one of the biggest acting comedians in the world and would be great to throw on the billing alongside the NBA superstars. Throwing him in the main game will be sure to provide some height-related laughs, which is just sadly predictable. Speaking of biggest acting comedians in the world…
Tiffany, who is as much of a threat to Kevin Hart in the comedy world as anyone, would be another great choice to provide some laughs within the movie. She also has some already built upon chemistry with Hart, starring alongside him in the 2018 movie, ‘Night School’.
Bill Hader, Michael B. Jordan
These are a little bit of a reach. I don’t have anything to back up my prediction for Michael B. Jordan, other than this quote from Michael in a Vanity Fair profile where he praised LeBron (also it’d be great to have him if it only meant making Michael Jordan jokes).
“Whenever I see [James], it’s love, always trying to represent our generation, represent our culture, like, ‘Why not us?’” says Jordan. “Things don’t have to be the way they’ve always been done. I just happen to do more than just act.”
Bill Hader and LeBron did star with each other in the 2015 Judd Apatow directed comedy, ‘Trainwreck’. They actually had some great chemistry in LeBron’s first acting role, especially in the scene below. At this point though I think we might be asking for too many high profile actors that the budget wouldn’t be able to cover.
The NBA Superstars
Obviously the biggest draw in this film will be what NBA players will be joining LeBron James for their acting debuts (or second-time acting gigs in certain cases discussed below). There were many NBA players in the first ‘Space Jam’ if you include the cameos, but the main five who lost their powers to the Monstars were Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, Shawn Bradley, Larry Johnson, and Patrick Ewing. I’ll try to predict who I think the core five will be below, with the first one seeming like a sure fire bet.
Where do I begin? Anthony Davis is a member of Klutch Sports Agency with LeBron. It has been rumored multiple times that AD wants to play on the Lakers with LeBron whether that’s now or in the future. And, oh yeah, he did this during the New Orleans Pelicans’ final game this year.
Many noticed that it was a very on-the-nose reference to Davis possibly (and probably) being traded this off season. However, galaxy-brain thinkers like myself will also notice that it is a Looney Tunes reference. I’d say he’s the biggest lock out of these NBA players to make an appearance.
Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, and other members of LeBron’s second run with the Cavs
Kyrie Irving is only slightly less likely than Davis to appear in this movie in my mind. He has the obvious history with LeBron James in Cleveland, but he also has some acting experience. He recently starred in the movie based off his elderly alter-ego, ‘Uncle Drew’, that starred a handful of former NBA greats. In addition to Kyrie, I think Kevin Love could end up as another of the five main guys. Him and LeBron continue to have friendly banter across social media even after LeBron’s departure, and I’m sure he wouldn’t think twice about the opportunity. Also don’t be surprised if some other former Cavs make some cameos, especially J.R. Smith and Richard Jefferson who are pretty damn funny.
Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons
Now we’re reaching the point where I’m sort of reaching. Ben Simmons definitely seems like a reach, but he’s a rising star in the NBA. He has some Hollywood connections with his girlfriend Kendall Jenner, and is also represented by Klutch Sports Agency with AD and LeBron.
Kevin Durant could also join Kyrie Irving as a second-time actor, following his debut in his own movie, ‘Thunderstruck’ (which got an abysmal 27% on Rotten Tomatoes). Along with Kyrie, KD is also a potential free agent who could join the Lakers this summer and could star alongside LeBron in ‘Space Jam 2’ before playing alongside him in the 2019-20 season.
Other Potential Cameos
I’ve got Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, Kevin Durant, and Ben Simmons as the potential main five NBA players in the movie. That doesn’t mean there can’t be countless other NBA stars in the movie, just as there was in the first ‘Space Jam’. I think the “banana boat” guys being in the movie is almost as certain as AD, Kyrie, or Kevin Hart. I’m of course referring to LeBron’s longtime friends Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul. Some former NBA greats could make appearances as well, specifically Shaquille O’Neal, who loooooves to be in movies (including but not limited to ‘Uncle Drew’, ‘Grown Ups 2’, ‘Scary Movie 4’, and the extremely infamous 90s movies, ‘Steel’ and ‘Kazaam’).
Even though they’re probably as uncertain as KD and the Simmons, the Lakers youngins’ could make appearances. Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma would be some great comedic relief in some cameo appearances.
In the first ‘Space Jam’, Michael Jordan’s kids had a pretty great scene in the movie. Unbeknownst to me, those kids were not MJ’s actual kids which was sort of a “childhood ruined” type moment for me. With that being said, I could totally see appearances from LeBron’s actual family including his wife Savannah and his children LeBron Jr., Bryce, and Zhuri.
Expect some announcements soon. It’s sure to be a star-studded cast. Or maybe the national media is right and no NBA players will want to appear in their first and probably only blockbuster movie for one of the most popular sports movie franchises ever.
